Many children have anxiety about being left at the Anganwadi center without their mothers in tow. Sariya was just the same. Her fear of being at the AWC prevented her from speaking for the entire duration. She would also not consume any food that was being provided to her. As the hot cooked and dry meals are high in nutritional value, this worried her parents and the staff at the AWC According to her mother, the AWW had tried various ways to engage Sariya but was unable to get the desired results
Upon starting Project Ankur, the education facilitator talked to her parents working on targeted language-based activities such as songs, stories, labelling activities etc. to help her feel more involved in what was happening around her.
Her family started noticing changes when her mother observed that she was mimicking activities from AWC through hand gestures, non- verbally. Over the span of 3-4 months, Sariya went from non-verbal to verbal communication and her eating habits were back on track, thereby helping her achieve her developmental milestones across all domains. Her mother credits the same to the varying activities carried out under Ankur.

Anganwadi Center Name: Asudgaon Anganwadi
Center, Panvel
Asad suffered from consistent behavioural problems and hyper activity, as reported by the Anganwadi worker(AWW) prior to the implementation of Project Ankur. These problems also lead to trying times at the AWC as he would refuse to participate in activities and would often run away without informing. His parents feared that this will adversely affect his learning development. Along with, continuous discussion with Asad’s parents and the AWW, the education facilitator began engaging him in multiple activities such as free play, conversation and games in an effort to channelize his energy constructively.
Through continuous encouragement, follow-ups and validation during activities, Asad began to enjoy his time at the AWC. He is catching up with his age group, his confidence has grown and the change in him is very evident. Asad's parents are now keen to enrol him in the village primary school and have credited this change in behaviour to the support received from Project Ankur.

(Mother of Rhea aged 5 Years)
Anganwadi Center Name: Navade Anganwadi 2
Rhea is a bright student currently enrolled at Pisarve Anganwadi 2. She is always the first to participate in activities with confidence and enthusiasm. However, her mother, Sucheta did not participate in activities and was not very involved in her child's education and learning at the center. She believed that she was unable to teach her children as she did not speak English nor did she know what to do at the pre-school level. Her notion of ECCE was that it was only possible to provide assistance if you were a trained teacher.
Project Ankurs palak shalas played a key role in changing these thought practices as it focuses on activities that can be done with common household items and things found in the child's environment. With the guidance of the education facilitator, Sucheta learnt how to make Teaching Learning Material from recycled paper, improve language development through stories and everyday conversations and learned how to keep her child healthy through trainings carried out by the project team. Her involvement at the AWC has not only benefitted Rhea but also her younger sister who was enrolled at the center instead of at a private nursery as was the plan a year ago. The ability to see the merits of the support available through an AWC has enabled holistic growth and development for the entire family. She states that she now feels confident and overjoyed that she can play a role in her children's education. and enthusiasm.

Saad Ansari lives in Sataknadu village in Ranchi with his mother- Nusrat Parveen and father- Jamahir Ansari. Saad is 3 years old. He is an only child and receives immense love from his parents. While sharing the changes observed in Saad, his mother highlighted how Saad was not willingly taking part in activities at the centre and also refused to go to the Anganwadi on many occasions.
However, with the colourful changes that came from the infrastructural refurbishment and the arrival of exciting learning material, Saad has now started visiting the centre regularly. He is no longer the quiet boy he used to be and now knows Alphabets as well as his numbers. He also recognizes colours, flowers and fruits. His mother further states that she is very happy with the progress of her child says that the Anganwadi centre is made very well. The positive changes such as solar support attracts many families away from private nurseries and into the centre supported by Ankur.
