A Guide To Women's Health Issues, From Puberty To Post-Menopause

AJ 12.4.2024 5 mins

Pain and discomfort are indeed a part of the package of being a woman but they can be managed through information and medical help. Women's health awareness helps avoid misdiagnosis and confusion.

Let us understand a woman's health care at every stage of her life.

Puberty - Welcome to womanhood

Puberty begins when the body starts to function as an adult. It starts releasing hormones, activating the production of eggs in the ovaries. Anywhere from 10 to 14, the body starts to show signs of puberty, such as -

·       Changes in body shape, like breasts and hips

·       Vaginal hair growth

·       Sudden growth spurt

·       Acne on the face and body

·       Behaviour changes

·       Heightened emotions

·       Attraction to the opposite sex

When this egg is not fertilised, your first period arrives. Periods usually come 2 years or so after puberty starts and can be irregular and painful initially. However, these timelines can vary for everyone.

The story of every woman's life is that hormones drive them. They are not moody, they are hormonal. Puberty is the start of that journey.

Managing the changes during puberty

·       Accept the changes wholeheartedly, the only way ahead is through.

·       Talk about how you feel about the changes with your parents/older sibling openly.

·       Be physically active; exercise can make a huge difference in how you feel.

·       Eat a balanced diet. Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables to get iron, calcium, and vitamin-C-rich food. Avoid fatty and processed foods.

·       Learn about hygiene during menstruation. Clean your vagina using water, and avoid harsh soaps. Explore different pads, tampons, and cups to find what suits you best.

·       Do not experiment with skincare. Cleanse, moisturise, and use sunscreen. If necessary, visit a dermatologist for acne.

·       See a doctor if you have any questions or feel pain in your abdomen.

Adolescence and young adulthood - The next phase

The ages of 15 to 25 are transformative. You are trying to get comfortable in your body, figure out who you are, and learn to manage your emotions.

Women's wellness tips for adolescents and young adults

·       Do not let peer pressure affect you. This is easier said than done. So, if it affects you, get help.

·       Give priority to your mental health. Just like you changed, others did too. Give them and yourself the benefit of the doubt. Shield your heart from negativity.

·       Seek out a healthy relationship with food. Focus on balance and a diet that works for your routine and body. Do not equate food with weight or weight with looks.

·       Value your sleep. Never compromise on your 8 hours; it is your body's chance to recover.

·       Get comfortable with your gynecologist. Asking the right questions at the right time will prevent many problems.

·       Read about lump examinations for breast and HPV cervical cancer vaccinations. The best time to get the vaccine is before you are sexually active. However, it can be taken after with some precautions.

·       Understand your sexual urges; don't shy away from them. Practice caution and protection. Be safe.

Reproductive Years - The deciding years

Being a mother is a huge decision, but it is not an isolated one. From the ages of 26 to 45, a woman's fertility climbs to its peak and starts to decline. Exercise, a healthy diet, regular sleep schedules, and stress busters need to be a part of your life.

Women's health issues to look out for

·      Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD)

PCOS and PCOD are two different issues, but the symptoms they present are quite similar. Both PCOS and PCOD can cause irregular or missed periods, but that is not all they do. They can cause weight gain, severe acne, hair thinning, increased facial hair, and infertility. They can also increase susceptibility to diabetes, heart problems, and cancer.
Both problems are manageable with lifestyle changes and medication.

·      Cancer

Ovarian, breast, and cervical cancers are increasing. Women's health awareness is a powerful tool to aid prevention and early detection. Familiarise yourself with causes, symptoms, available vaccines, and your family history. See a doctor immediately if any of the above raises any alarms.

Pregnancy and childbirth
Pregnancy is a beautiful journey. Pave it with information and discussion. Read about women's health tips from reliable sources. Discuss timing, a birth plan, financial responsibilities, and housework when planning a child.

If you are planning a pregnancy, contact a doctor for a full checkup to learn more about your and your spouse's health. Learn about women's wellness to increase your chances of a healthy pregnancy.

Perimenopause - In between the lines

The phase of your family when your ovaries gradually age with you. Just as puberty causes a lot of changes, perimenopause does too. Your body is now learning to live with less hormones.

What happens during perimenopause?

·       Mood changes

·       Headaches

·       Hot flashes

·       Night sweats

·       Dryness in the vagina

·       Lack of sleep

·       Fatigue

·       Changes in sexual desires

While it is a passage of time, one must pass through. Some medications and therapy can oil the wheels. Keep a check on your bone health, B12, and vitamin D during perimenopause.

Menopause - The restart

Menopause is the year after your last period. Unfortunately, it is not as simple as having a last period. For many women, this can mean heavy and unexpected bleeding. You should look out for uterine fibroids or polyps.

Depression and anxiety are common partners in menopause. Therapy and open conversations with the family can help navigate this time.

Regular checkups, a healthy diet, and a bit of exercise are a must during and after menopause.

Women's health care should be a priority throughout life. Whatever stage of life you are at, your health is your wealth. Healthy bodies house strong hearts and minds. Take care of your health before anything else.

Women's bodies are complex and unique. Take women's health issues seriously and opt for insurance designed especially for you. Women's health insurance, offered by Future Generali - HEALTH POWHER embodies this understanding.
