Cruising on your two-wheeler or SUV has its own thrill, but getting stopped by a traffic police officer without a valid driving licence can quickly become a nightmare! That's why renewing your licence on time is a must, just like third party car insurance. But how can you do it easily and correctly? Well, you can do it both online and offline conveniently.
This blog post is all about the detailed renewal process and all other related things you must know. Let's dig deeper to gain a better understanding!
There are numerous reasons behind renewing your driving licence on time.
Stay legally compliant
A valid driving licence in India isn’t just a formality—it’s your official permit to drive legally on public roads. Without it, you risk fines and other legal consequences, as driving with an expired licence violates the Motor Vehicle Act 1988. Renewing your licence on time keeps you on the right side of the law.
Ensure insurance coverage
In case of an accident, a valid licence is crucial to make a third party car insurance claim. Insurers need proof of your current driving status to cover damages or liabilities. An expired licence can mean a denied claim and heavy cash burning from your pocket.
Maintain driving privileges
Driving on public roads is a privilege, and having an active licence protects that. Without it, your right to drive is paused. Timely renewal keeps this essential convenience uninterrupted.
For work and travel needs
Many jobs rely on a valid licence, especially in roles like delivery or transportation. Plus, it’s often needed to rent cars or access specific services. You can easily renew driving license online and ensure you’re always ready for professional and personal travel.
How to renew driving licence online
We understand many of you find the online driving licence renewal process convenient. Here's how to do it-
- Begin by visiting Parivahan Sewa’s website. Select ‘Online Services’ and click ‘Driving Licence Related Services.’
- Choose the state where you’ll process the renewal to ensure it’s linked to your local Regional Transport Office (RTO).
- Click on “Apply for DL Renewal” to start the renewal application.
- Read all the instructions carefully on the next page and Click ‘Continue’.
- Enter your date of birth, driving licence(DL) number, and the captcha code to continue.
- In some states, you may need to upload your documents digitally with a photo and signature.
- Complete the payment online.
- After completing the process, save the application ID for future reference.
For those who prefer the traditional way, here's the offline driving licence renewal process-
- Go to the local RTO with all necessary documents.
- Provide your driving licence details and a recent photograph.
- If you’re renewing in a different state, bring a No Objection Certificate (NOC).
- Pay the renewal fee to initiate the process.
- You may be asked to submit a medical certificate or book a test slot, depending on your medical status.
- Once all steps are complete and you pass the test(if required), the RTO will issue your renewed licence.
Gather these documents to renew driving license online or offline swiftly-
- Age and address proof
- Expired driving licence
- Passport-size photographs
- Duly filled Form 2
- Form 1 or 1A for medical fitness declaration
The above documents are for non-transport vehicles. The list is the same for commercial ones, accompanied by the driver refreshing certificate if you have a heavy motor vehicle.
A valid driving licence is more than permission to drive; it’s key to staying legally protected. Similarly, having third party car insurance is also a legal requirement. But, without a current licence, making a claim becomes challenging when the need arises. So, why not keep everything up to the mark?
