Don't overdo it at work: How to avoid stress and job burnout

26.10.2023 5 mins

Work stress is rising, particularly amongst young people, who feel extreme pressure to perform and keep their jobs. According to a report, 82% of Indians feel stressed at work and most of them are also uncomfortable talking about their situation.

Given that we spend as much as a quarter of our life working, keeping a cool head and a clear mind is essential. Here’s how to manage stress and avoid burnout:

Practice mindfulness to reduce work stress

It’s easy to live inside our heads and to stop noticing the world around us. Mindfulness teaches us to be aware of our thoughts, feelings and surroundings as they happen. Doing this allows us to live in the present and identify signs of job stress or anxiety early.

Mindfulness can be as easy as regularly tuning into your thoughts to practising yoga and meditation. If you’re new to meditation, try apps like Calm, Prana Breath or The Mindfulness App. With the help of mindful living, you can manage high-stress jobs without any trouble.

Eat healthy to counter side effects of overworking

We are what we eat, and during times of stress, our body needs the right fuel. Chronic stress increases the demand for protein, so boost your intake of lean meats, fish and eggs. Avoid overeating, as stress diverts blood flow away from the digestive system.

Although this might sound impossible, try and cut back on caffeine! After that initial burst of energy from your morning espresso, a slump of depleted energy levels follow. Try substituting coffee with green tea and honey. Doing this will not only increase longevity but reduces your risk of several diseases.

Take regular breaks at work

We often think of the mind and body as separate, but what we do with our body can have a powerful effect on our mental well-being. Regular exercise lowers stress hormones and reduces the risk of depression and anxiety by as much as 25%.

When working, try to take a break from your desk and walk. Doing this will uplift your energy level, improve sleep, boosts self-esteem and will help you in clearing your mind. You should also aim to do strenuous cardio 3-4 times a week to boost your overall health.

Try these work stress burnout remedies

We work to live, not live to work. So set aside time to enjoy hobbies or learn new skills that will help to alleviate stress and give you a sense of achievement. By taking the time to look after your body and mind, you’ll be better equipped to dealing with job burnout and whatever life throws your way.

Another reason for work stress could be your physical health. Therefore, getting regular check-ups can help you determine if your body is lacking in certain vitamins and minerals. Most health insurance plans offer yearly checks that are free of cost, so you can stay protected and aware of your overall health.
