A fancy number plate, also known as personalized or VIP number plate, is a unique vehicle registration number consisting of special number series such as 9999, 1111, 0001, 0100, etc. It offers a unique combination of numbers that distinguish it from regular number plates.

The Regional Transport Office (RTO) of all the states generally reserves a couple of numbers, beginning from 0001 to 9999 as earmarked VIP number plates. The transport authority periodically issues a list of the available VIP numbers on its website to enable vehicle owners to check the availability and apply for it.
RTO Fancy number plates are allotted through auctions. The VIP number plate prices are charged at a higher price than the other number plates for their unique and distinguishing factor. Before applying for a fancy registration number, you must check your desired registration number's availability with the Regional Transport Office.
How to get an RTO fancy number plate for your bike
The process of applying for fancy plate number plates is different and comprehensive from that of regular number plates. Here is the step-by-step process:
1. Select the desired number combination
Begin with choosing a couple of fancy number plates and check their availability.
2. Check the availability of your selected
Once you have selected the desired number combination, check its availability on the official website of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (https://fancy.parivahan.gov.in/fancy/faces/public/login.xhtml). Select ‘search by number’ and fill in your state name and RTO name to check availability.
You can also check it on the website of the respective RTO of your state.
3. Reserve the number
Post confirmation of the availability of the fancy number; reserve the desired number by paying the reservation fees. It is necessary to note that the booking of a specific fancy number is valid only for 30 days within which the payment is to be made and the registration process to be completed.
4. Register yourself to participate in the auction
You will enter an auction process for your desired fancy number plate. Register yourself for the auction by paying nominal participation charges. The regional transport offices generally conduct periodic auctions for fancy registration numbers. The date of the auction is posted on the official RTO website.
5. Bid for the number
Keep track of the date of the auction on the RTO website, the date of the auction, and the bid for the desired number. The highest bidder for the number will win the number and will get it on payment of the fancy number charges. However, if multiple people are bidding for the same fancy number, the RTO may consider conducting a live auction.
6. Pay the fancy number plate charges
After winning the bid, pay the total amount within the stipulated period or collect the refund amount accordingly. In case of failure to pay for the fancy number plate, the allotment will stand cancelled.
The charges for fancy registration numbers are higher and vary across different states. You will have to pay an additional amount for the VIP number plate price. An advance is also to be paid to reserve the desired fancy or VIP number. The registration fees are generally not refundable. The amount for the fancy number plate depends on the series of numbers you want.
