Food, clothes, and shelter are the three necessities often listed by people when asked what's important in life. But taking care of health is as important as these three. With rising inflation, accessing quality healthcare services has become challenging for underprivileged people in India. However, the Maharashtra government aims to address this issue through the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana, a government scheme designed to provide economically weaker sections of society with health insurance that they might not be able to afford.
Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana is a government health insurance scheme launched by the Maharashtra Government. It is a health insurance scheme for people with a local income source. To ensure everyone can access high-quality healthcare services, the scheme provides coverage of up to ₹1.5 lakhs for beneficiaries and their families. So, it's one of the best health insurance for families.

Initially, it was named after India’s former Prime Minister, Mr. Rajiv Gandhi, as the Rajiv Gandhi Jeevandayee Arogya Yojana. In the beginning, it covered eight districts in Maharashtra. Following its success, the scheme was relaunched on 1st April 2017 on a larger scale, encompassing all districts of Maharashtra, and renamed after Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, a prominent social activist and businessman in India.
The scheme was designed to ensure comprehensive coverage with 34 specialised service categories, over 1300 procedures, and 262 follow-up procedures for a range of treatments. To facilitate these health benefits, the government has enlisted top healthcare providers in the hospital network. Additionally, it organises health camps to make quality healthcare accessible in remote areas.

The MJPJAY scheme offers similar features to standard health insurance, including comprehensive coverage and access to a wide network of hospitals. However, there are some differences between the MJPJAY scheme and regular health insurance plans.
Firstly, the MJPJAY scheme is valid only for Maharashtra's districts, meaning hospitalisation under this scheme is not available outside the state. On the other hand, a regular health insurance policy allows hospitalisation anywhere in the country.
Secondly, the scheme is specifically designed for economically disadvantaged individuals, requiring applicants to meet certain eligibility criteria. Unlike MJPJAY, regular health insurance is available to anyone willing to pay the premium.
These eligibility requirements for MJPJAY are crucial to prevent misuse since the scheme does not charge premiums to beneficiaries, unlike standard health insurance, which requires annual premium payments.
The scheme is implemented across 28 districts of Maharashtra, and all of these districts have hospitals that are part of the MJPJAY yojana.
